PATIENT CARE

Experience Stress-Free Dental Care with Safe and Effective Sedation Options."

If you feel anxiety at the thought of sitting in the dental chair, talk to us about sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry provides a solution for patients who would otherwise avoid dental treatment due to a fear of the dentist. Avoiding necessary dental care can put your oral health at risk and can create more serious oral conditions in the future. We can help by offering a variety of sedation dentistry solutions.

What are the benefits of sedation dentistry?

Sedation or sleep dentistry offers several benefits to patients including the following:

  1. It allows you to complete dental work in fewer visits.
  2. It can reduce a gag reflex that makes dentistry uncomfortable.
  3. It helps alleviate anxiety and leaves you relaxed after your procedure.
  4. It can keep you from remembering the sounds and smells often associated with dental anxiety.
  5. It can be beneficial for patients with conditions making it hard for them to remain still during treatment.

How will I be sedated?

Most forms of sedation used in dentistry allow you to remain conscious but relaxed, helping to ease the tension of undergoing dental procedures. We offer several methods of general anaesthetics:

Nitrous oxide

This is a common sedation technique. A small mask is fitted over your nose, and you inhale a nitrous oxide and oxygen blend while the procedure is taking place. Nitrous oxide causes a relaxed feeling during your dental procedures. The effect wears off just moments after the mask is removed, allowing you to immediately resume your normal activities.

IV Sedation

This is where aof a sedative administered directly into your bloodstream. IV sedation is good for shorter procedures. Administering the medication directly into your bloodstream means immediate results. You may feel as if you were asleep during your procedure, and you will need a driver as grogginess is normal following IV sedation.

Oral sedation

This procedure can be used for mild to moderate dental anxiety. You will be given a medication to be taken approximately an hour before your appointment. Oral sedation will leave you feeling very relaxed, and you may not even remember all of the procedure. You will need to be accompanied to your appointment by a friend or family member as oral sedation can take several hours to wear off. You will be monitored during your sedation to ensure that you are safe during the procedure.

If you are interested in sedation dentistry or have questions about how it works, please contact our office for more information. We will be happy to help you decide what’s right for you!

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

FAQs About Sleep Dentistry

For most adults with no serious health issues, sedation dentistry is perfectly safe. We will review your medical history to determine if sedation dentistry is an option. You will be closely monitored throughout your visit to ensure you are safe and comfortable during sedation. Some conditions may prevent certain forms of sedation dentistry, but other options may exist. Contact us for an evaluation.

You should plan to spend the rest of the day at home relaxing after you have sedation dentistry. If you opt for nitrous oxide, you will feel normal within a few minutes and can resume your regular schedule.

Most forms of dental sedation will leave you drowsy but conscious and able to voluntarily move and speak. Dental sedation will put you into a deeply relaxed state. You may find that time passes faster, and you may not even remember parts of the procedure when it is over, but you will be conscious the entire time.
